Malpas Closed Championship 16/07/2008

Gary beat Nick and Farhan beat Ron. In Group B, Ron and Will Elworthy go through.

In Group A, Gary goes through but the other semifinalist depends on the game between Adam and Dave Roberts. Adam needs to win to join Gary, anything else and it will be Dave and Gary going through. So the semi finals will be Will v Gary and Adam or Dave R v Ron

Gary Thomas has asked me to post the attached proposal for the make up of teams for next season. Only at this AGM will final decisions be made about the squads, team evenings, etc. and these will involve all those who are present, using a voting system if necessary. If in the meantime anyone would like to contribute by way of comment, feedback or by putting forward alternative proposals then please feel free to do so by contacting any of the senior players.

NB the order of players given here does not necessarily reflect board order/selection priority

In deciding which teams will play homes game on which evening consideration will need to be given to the fact that it is not currently possible to host two matches during the same evening at The Three Horseshoes, and also that

  • Both the B and C teams will play in the same division next year
  • Under this proposal players would be drafted (albeit infrequently) between the A and B teams

Harry Duff and the Curious Coincidence  - 09/11/2007

As you can see from Robert Taylor’s website, Harry is now leading the Division One performance table. So now seems a good time to relate Harry’s recent experience playing Internet chess.  Here it is in Harry’s own words...

A funny story at the weekend. I am playing a lot of internet chess at the moment - on chessworld.net. I have about 40 games going at the moment, 10 days per move typically. Anyway, one of my opponents is from Australia - well, playing under the Australia flag. He sees I'm called Penarth and starts telling me about this place he used to drink at in Penarth, that he used to live in Newport but emigrated to Australia about two and a half years ago. I say which part of Newport - he replies Malpas. I reply Malpas? Did you ever go into the Shoes? He replies yes, often (!) - he started the chess team. I am only playing Richie bloomin Carter!!

A small world ....

He says regards to one and all and he'll be over next Easter to drink you all under the table and beat you at chess - although the way he was playing against me (I beat him) I rather doubt it.
